he jumped in first
their shoes lie side by side—
his sandals, one inside the other,
tossed without a single thought.
then she thought, pausing to ponder,
considering what she was about to do—
one shoe slipping off and placed gently
next to the other, thinking,
”i love the ducks on the pond,”
then laughing, she ran,
closing her eyes before jumping in
to join him.
